Different Types of Orthodontics

Orthodontics is the specialty of dentistry that deals with the care and treatment of teeth. Orthodontics can be broken down into four main categories: fixed orthodontics, dynamic orthodontics, space occupying devices, and functional orthodontics. Fixed orthodontics refers to the use of braces and other devices to correct malocclusions (improper bite relationships). For more infomation, you can navigate to this site.

Dynamic orthodontics uses a combination of surgery and therapy to move teeth into better positions. Space occupying devices such as Invisalign will move teeth into their ideal positions without the need for braces. Functional orthodontics uses braces and other devices to help improve oral function by altering bite relationships and improving muscle function.

The history of orthodontics can be divided into four general periods: the prehistoric, classical, medieval and modern periods. The prehistoric period covers the time before written records and is mainly characterized by methods of tooth extraction and jaw construction using animal bones.

The classical period covers the time from the 5th century BC to the 4th century AD and is characterized by the development of precision instruments for measuring teeth and jaws.

The medieval period covers the time from the 4th century AD to the 15th century and is characterized by a proliferation of orthodontic techniques and concepts, as well as a growth in dental knowledge. The modern period began in the 16th century and is characterized by an increased emphasis on scientific methodology and clinical practice.
