The Pink Himalayan Salt

Pink Himalayan salt is a beautiful crystal salt with an intense green hue that looks a lot like lapis lazuli. The name Himalayan comes from a Hindi phrase meaning "High mountains". Because it is so highly purified, Himalayan salt has been regulated by some governments to be free from certain contaminants.

Himalayan table salt is mined in the foothills of the Himalayan Mountains in Pakistan. The salt, which sometimes has a reddish hue because of iron traces, is mainly used for food seasoning and as a beauty ingredient in cosmetics, decorative bath products, and spa treatment. However, it is an extremely healthy alternative to table salt because Himalayan salt mined in this high altitude environment is much healthier than regular table salt because its mineral content is so high.

Iodized table salt has no more than a trace of sodium per inch of its surface. On the other hand, Himalayan salt has up to three and a half times more sodium per inch! That's because the Himalayan salt crystals are so fine that they crystallize on the surface much like a fingerprint. Salt crystal growth occurs at different temperatures and can range from very fine grains to large hairs that resemble tiny rice grains.

This high concentration of mineral ions is what gives Himalayan salt its special health benefits. The fine salt crystal releases negative ions that create freshness and revitalization. In addition, the crystal's fine structure allows the negative ions to adhere closely to each crystal, increasing its cleansing abilities. Over time, this increase in positive ion concentration causes the salt to lose its absorbent ability and become less absorbent as time goes on. Eventually, Pink Himalayan salt will become almost completely void of any trace elements, which allows it to increase its purity and crystallization capacity.

A drawback of the pure Himalayan salt comes when you compare it to man-made salt deposits. Although many countries have tried and succeeded in mining sodium, the process is extremely labor-intensive and costly. A commercial mine in Australia claims to have mined the largest deposits of salt in the world, yet only managed to produce less than one percent as pure salt. The large-scale effort to mine for pure salt in the Himalayan region has largely failed because of the high costs of transporting the salt to many different places.

Natural Himalayan salt contains a lot of sodium chloride. However, its composition is very similar to that of sodium chloride. The difference lies in the method by which the salt is processed. Natural salt contains traces of magnesium, calcium, and potassium, while man-made salt contains only sodium chloride and sometimes magnesium and calcium. Because of the large amount of salt produced by the mines in the Himalayan region, most of it ends up being used in cooking or baking recipes.

Although the Himalayan Pink Salt can definitely satisfy our sodium needs, it can be said that it is not as beneficial as table salt. On the one hand, it does not have the additional benefits of being bio-available, since it is derived from volcanic ash. Moreover, it does not have the beneficial properties of sodium chloride. Table salt on the other hand is well-known for its ability to regulate blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and energy levels. On the other hand, Himalayan pink salt contains hardly any of these properties and can actually interfere with our cardiovascular systems. Moreover, the negative effects of this salt also depend on our diet.

According to a study by the US National Institute of Health, more than eighty percent of the people living in the foothills of the Himalayas are salt deprived. It is because of this reason that Himalayan salt lamps have gained a lot of popularity in recent times. These lamps, which are made of natural herbs like sage, Cayenne pepper, bergamot, orange peel, etc, produce a faint yellow glow when they are burned in the presence of sunlight. It is due to the presence of this trace mineral that Himalayan salt lamps have become popular even though they have no side effects whatsoever.
